Making room for one focused counselling session

A client preparing a focused topic for one counselling session

Sometimes there is one issue you particularly want to think through with someone impartial. A conversation has gone badly, a decision is approaching, or a familiar difficulty has come up again. You may want a focused appointment without assuming at the outset that you will begin a longer course of counselling.

Choose a useful starting point

Relate describes its one-session approach as focusing on a particular issue or skill. Anne also offers single-session counselling for couples and individuals who want to concentrate on a specific relationship concern.

Before you attend, try completing a simple sentence: the thing I most want help understanding is this. Your answer does not have to be precise. It is a starting point that you and the counsellor can explore, rather than a test of whether you have prepared properly.

Bring the situation, not just the conclusion

Think about a recent example. What happened? What felt difficult? What have you already tried? If you are attending as a couple, each person may have a different answer, and both perspectives can help identify what needs attention.

You might also consider what would make the conversation useful. Perhaps you want to understand the disagreement more clearly, find a way to begin a difficult discussion, or consider the next step in a decision. A focused aim is more manageable than expecting one meeting to settle the whole future of a relationship.

Leave room for what you discover

Anne’s service information makes clear that further counselling is available if one appointment is not sufficient. Agreeing to begin with a single session is not a guarantee that every issue can be resolved within it.

Before the session ends, you can discuss what feels clearer, which questions remain and whether further support would be useful. You may want to note one practical step to consider afterwards, rather than trying to remember everything that was said.

Contact Anne to discuss whether this format is appropriate for the concern you want to bring. Current fees and contact details are available on the website.
