A short reply or a quiet evening can sometimes become the beginning of a much larger worry. You may find yourself deciding that your partner is angry, that you have done something wrong, or that the relationship is about to end. The feeling can be strong even when you have little information about what is happening.
Separate what happened from what you fear
NHS guidance on unhelpful thoughts suggests stepping back and considering the evidence and possible alternative explanations. This is not about forcing yourself to be cheerful. A more balanced thought can simply leave room for uncertainty.
For example, a delayed reply tells you that you have not yet received an answer. It does not, by itself, tell you why. You might note the worry, consider what else could explain the delay, and choose whether a calm question would be useful. This example applies to uncertain situations; it is not a reason to dismiss clear evidence that something is wrong.
Find the part you can act on
The NHS also distinguishes practical problems from worries about events outside your control. Writing down what concerns you can make it easier to see the difference. A practical step might be agreeing how to communicate when plans change. Trying to obtain certainty about every future feeling is a different task.
If worries take over the day, the NHS describes setting aside a short period to write them down and consider possible actions. Different approaches suit different people. You can try a small step and notice whether it helps, without turning it into another standard you must meet perfectly.
When to ask for support
Anne offers counselling where anxiety, depression and negative thoughts are affecting relationships. You can discuss what is happening between you, how you respond to difficult feelings and what support may fit your situation.
These reflections do not diagnose an anxiety condition or replace appropriate healthcare. If anxiety is persistent, worsening or disrupting daily life, speak with a GP or a qualified mental health professional about the help available.
You do not have to solve every worry before you can talk about it.
